A form of privilege, as Rodríguez states, is impossible for artists in Mexico, South America, Africa, and a great deal of the world.Ī Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction marks an early venture into the no touring model encouraged by Mitchell and Bel. It must absolutely be noted – as Mexican artist Lazaro Gabino Rodríguez did in his excellent 2021 “Open Letter to Jérôme Bel” ( ), this call for no-fly art is steeped in a white, Western European privilege extended to relatively few, very famous, artists, who can afford to no longer fly to tour, will still be hired to produce work, and earn enough money to comfortably live off of without having to travel themselves. Both Mitchell and Bel produced waves recently by stating they would no longer fly for their shows and making a call to reconfigure the world of performing arts by reducing artistic jet setting. A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction is a multi-theatre project headed by British director Katie Mitchell and part of the project “Sustainable Theatre?” conceived by Mitchell, Jérôme Bel, and Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in collaboration with the University of Lausanne’s Centre in Sustainability.
